1. Shade East and West facing windows. We all know the sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Take the time to buy the right curtains such as blackout curtains or shades to keep the heat from sneaking in throughout the day.

2. Decorate with indoor plants. Indoor plants help keep the air around them cool. They use photosynthesis to survive and create energy. Plants also use the heat around them as energy to create their own food with water and sunlight.  (more…)

Be the Master of Your Move

Posted On: Thursday, July 2nd, 2015

Tips for a Stress-Free MoveYou’ve saved your pennies and budgeted for your rent, but have you planned for all of the details after you’ve signed your lease? Moving into an apartment is a big step, but it can be made much easier if you prioritize planning before you drive away from your former residence. If you’re considering moving into a new apartment, there are some simple solutions to mastering your move:

Make moving arrangements in advance: Are you using professionals or your friends to help you move? Whether you’re trusting your buddies or resting easy with the pros, make your arrangements several weeks ahead of time. Even if you’re moving yourself, this may mean renting a truck or using short-term storage. Some apartment communities have relationships with moving companies that offer discounts, so make sure you check with your new community office to see if this is an option.

Don’t procrastinate on your packing: Start with the trinkets and seasonal items that don’t get used very often, and save the everyday-use items for the end. If you start packing early, you’ll relieve yourself of that stress on the night before your move. (more…)

How to Ace Your First Place: A First-Time Renter’s Guide

Posted On: Wednesday, July 1st, 2015

First-time rental guideYou may be done with school, but renting your first apartment is a lot like taking an exam; a certain amount of preparation must be done to ensure that you make the grade. Knowing what to expect, and planning for the unexpected, can make all the difference when you’re out on your own for the first time.

First, and probably most important, set a budget; ideally, rent should make up no more than 30 percent of your income. Make sure to start a contingency fund to save for unexpected expenses, and be prepared to shell out a considerable amount for a security deposit (this often this equals first month’s rent), utilities and fees for any extra amenities.

Be prepared to go through the application process. Have all the relevant information easily accessible, such as proof of employment, and allow enough time for a credit and background check to process. If you cannot provide a sufficient credit report or work history, a co-signer may be required to complete the lease agreement. In addition, you should always read everything on the lease. If you don’t understand or agree with something, speak up and have the landlord explain it to you; this will save you from a lot of headaches, and possible legal battles, down the road. (more…)
