Stylishly Pet-Proofing Your Apartment

Posted On: Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Stamford Apartments FurnitureYou love your apartment, and you love your pet. You want your pet to be safe and comfortable in your apartment, but you don’t want to sacrifice your personal style in the process. To make you and your four-legged friends happy in the same space, the following tips and tricks from the Design Sponge blog will help you stylishly pet-proof your apartment.

For animals that shed a lot, a dark rug with small patterns will help hide pet hair, dirt and stains much better than a solid or wide-print pattern.  An indoor/outdoor rug is easy to clean and can stand up to tough scrubbing when your pets forget their manners, and a low-pile rug will make your pets less likely to make your carpet their personal scratching post.

Speaking of scratching posts, rope can be a useful tool to make an alternative to those often unsightly cat toys. By wrapping sisal rope around exposed pipes or table legs, you can create a place for your cat to scratch while adding visual interest to the space. If your cat is still having a scratch attack, velvet is the way to go for your upholstery. It’s not a looped thread, so your pet has less to sink his claws into to ruin your furniture. If you already have furniture picked out and it’s not velvet, a durable throw blanket will do the trick. (more…)

Be the Master of Your Move

Tips for a Stress-Free MoveYou’ve saved your pennies and budgeted for your rent, but have you planned for all of the details after you’ve signed your lease? Moving into an apartment is a big step, but it can be made much easier if you prioritize planning before you drive away from your former residence. If you’re considering moving into a new apartment, there are some simple solutions to mastering your move:

Make moving arrangements in advance: Are you using professionals or your friends to help you move? Whether you’re trusting your buddies or resting easy with the pros, make your arrangements several weeks ahead of time. Even if you’re moving yourself, this may mean renting a truck or using short-term storage. Some apartment communities have relationships with moving companies that offer discounts, so make sure you check with your new community office to see if this is an option.

Don’t procrastinate on your packing: Start with the trinkets and seasonal items that don’t get used very often, and save the everyday-use items for the end. If you start packing early, you’ll relieve yourself of that stress on the night before your move. (more…)

Learn the History Behind the Witch Hat at Fairfield Museum near Norwalk

Posted On: Friday, October 17th, 2014

During the Halloween season, we often associate witches with broomsticks, black hats, pointy noses, green faces and a cackling laughter. On Oct. 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Fairfield Museum and History Center will be hosting “Museum After Dark,” exposing the true story behind witches at one of its new exhibits, Accused: Fairfield’s Witchcraft Trials.

Visitors will be guided through the early history of witch trials all over Connecticut, including those held on the historic Fairfield Town Green in 1653, 1654 and 1692. While the Salem trials are more well-known, the trials in Fairfield during the same time period are representative of how 17th century New Englanders often responded to their fears about the unknown.
