Last-minute Halloween Costumes

Posted On: Monday, October 26th, 2015

Easy last-minute Halloween costume ideasWe’ve all been there; you decide you’re going to spend Halloween evening at home with the lights off, watching a marathon of your favorite scary movies with a big bowl of popcorn. All of a sudden, the phone rings! No, it’s not the Ghostface killer from “Scream” or the terrifying girl from “The Ring;” it’s your friend inviting you to her Halloween party that starts in just a few hours.

Of course it’s a costume party, and the only thing scarier than watching the “Friday the 13th” movies alone would be showing up to that party completely underdressed. Thankfully, we’ve gathered some of the best last-minute Halloween costumes that you can make with things you probably have around the house.

Since you might already be dressed for bed by the time you get your invite, just go as you are! Add slippers and an eye mask for that something extra for your pajama party. (more…)

6 Tips on How You Can Prepare Your Apartment This Winter

6 Tips on How You Can Prepare Your Apartment This Winter Winter is coming and you know what that means: cold weather. Don’t let the weather stop you from enjoying this season. Prepare your apartment right, so that you can stay warm and be happy. Here are six tips on how you can prepare your apartment for this winter.

1. Closet Conversion
We all have different clothes for different seasons. Prepare for the winter by swapping out your summer clothes for your more comfy, warmer clothes. Start taking out your sweaters, jeans and boots, and start packing away your shorts, tank tops and flip-flops. This will make it easier for you when trying to find the perfect warm outfit to wear in this cold season.

2. Fireplace Maintenance
We all love to snuggle up next to the fireplace when it is cold. If this is you, then now is the time to start cleaning out your fireplace from last year’s ashes, and stock up on new firewood. The Montoya apartment homes in Branford feature fireplaces that are not only beautiful to look at, but will also help keep you warm during the cold winter months. (more…)

Stylishly Pet-Proofing Your Apartment

Posted On: Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Stamford Apartments FurnitureYou love your apartment, and you love your pet. You want your pet to be safe and comfortable in your apartment, but you don’t want to sacrifice your personal style in the process. To make you and your four-legged friends happy in the same space, the following tips and tricks from the Design Sponge blog will help you stylishly pet-proof your apartment.

For animals that shed a lot, a dark rug with small patterns will help hide pet hair, dirt and stains much better than a solid or wide-print pattern.  An indoor/outdoor rug is easy to clean and can stand up to tough scrubbing when your pets forget their manners, and a low-pile rug will make your pets less likely to make your carpet their personal scratching post.

Speaking of scratching posts, rope can be a useful tool to make an alternative to those often unsightly cat toys. By wrapping sisal rope around exposed pipes or table legs, you can create a place for your cat to scratch while adding visual interest to the space. If your cat is still having a scratch attack, velvet is the way to go for your upholstery. It’s not a looped thread, so your pet has less to sink his claws into to ruin your furniture. If you already have furniture picked out and it’s not velvet, a durable throw blanket will do the trick. (more…)

Why Millennials Would Rather Rent Than Buy

Posted On: Thursday, June 25th, 2015

Millennials would rather rent than buy, outnumbering Baby Boom generation As the job market continues to improve, young college graduates are rapidly becoming the largest share of the American workforce. However, due to the national $1 trillion student loan debt and an increased “sharing mentality” among Millennials, this surge in the labor force has not necessarily translated into home sales.

According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, Millennials will surpass the Baby Boom generation in size this year. This growing demographic has extensive knowledge of technology and is more likely to graduate from college, making these individuals more desirable candidates for jobs while also burdening them with never-ending student loan debts. Because of this, the option of renting is becoming more appealing and the idea of homeownership is now a distant concept for those in the 18-34 age range.

Millennials choose to rent for several reasons. For one, the majority of jobs that require the knowledge and skills many recent graduates possess are ones that happen to be available in major cities throughout the country. Therefore, Millennials are no longer looking to live in large suburban homes because they are not convenient to work or they simply cannot afford to finance a home. Many people in their 20s are also more likely to change jobs or relocate for work within five years of accepting their first jobs. So, they see no point in being tied down to a major purchase they made when they were fresh out of college. Additionally, renting does not require extensive home maintenance, which often contributes to stress that Millennials do not want, need or have time for as they are starting their careers.

How to Keep your Apartment Warm During Freezing Temperatures

Posted On: Wednesday, February 25th, 2015

Winter is in full swing in Connecticut, and during this time of year there’s nothing better than stepping into a warm, cozy apartment. However, it’s important to practice safety when heating your residence. Here are several ways you can stay warm, healthy and happy throughout the winter season.

Prevent pipes from freezing. When temperatures drop below freezing, it’s important to keep water flowing through the pipes. Periodically flush your toilets during the day, and leave your kitchen and bathroom taps on a thin trickle of water throughout the night.

Keep pipes ventilated. Leave all cabinet doors underneath sinks open, so the water pipes will remain ventilated with warm air. When you’re not at home, do not leave bathroom doors closed. (more…)
