Staying Motivated Through the Semester

motivationNovember and December can be tricky months to stay motivated until the end of the semester. Through the massive amount projects, papers and exams, exhaustion has set in. Not to mention the weather is changing, making your nice warm CTBest apartment sound even cozier, plus the holidays and winter break are just around the corner.

While you may be low on energy, time and resources, here are a few tips on how to stay motivated at the end of the semester:

Find a social support network

Friends and family are great supporters, but there are a number of additional options available when building your support team. College is the perfect time to develop meaningful relationships with new people and to strengthen the relationships you already have. If you are ever overwhelmed or struggling in school, the classmates in your support network will be willing to help you and offer their guidance, insight and strategies for success.

Set attainable goals

A 25-page paper for class is a big job and focusing on that number can be overwhelming. Instead break down the paper and consider each section individually. Focusing on long-term goals can be motivating, but when you’re stressed sometimes focusing on the smaller goals help you relax and feel more accomplished.

Change your routine

While it’s important to have a routine, it’s also important to change it up when your energy starts to run out. If you’re always going to bed late, waking up late, skipping breakfast and have no time for exercise then try to change things up.  Go to bed early, wake up early and exercise, enjoy a balanced breakfast. Changing just a few things in your daily routine and watch your stresses fade away.

Drop something from your to-do list

If you’re tired and overworked, chances are the work you’re doing isn’t going to be that productive anyway. Take a look at your to-do list and pick one or two things that are stressing you out and drop them – without feeling guilty.

While the winter months may seem harder to get motivated, it’s the perfect time of year to focus on your school work. There are far less events taking place and not as many distractions outdoors. Getting through these last few weeks can be difficult, especially with the holidays and home sweet home being right around the corner.
