On Saturday May 5, the Mill River Park in downtown Stamford will host a Cherry Blossom Festival from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The day promises to be full of performances and activities for all of Stamford to enjoy. Residents of our Stamford rental apartment communities of Morgan Manor, Hoyt-Bedford and The Townhouse are just a few blocks away and can leave their cars at home while they partake of the celebration. It will also be a chance to come and view the progress of the new Mill River Park.
Already many of the gardens have been planted with nearly 20,000 bulbs. Construction on the rest of the Master Plan for the park calls for development of a 28-acre park on both sides of Mill River from Broad Street to Pulaski Street that will serve as an oasis in city life for Stamford residents and area employees. There will be a series of urban park spaces containing a playground, carousel, great lawn, skating rink and fountain, kayak launch, fishing piers, café, sculpture garden and a new cherry tree esplanade.
The Cherry Trees are noteworthy as they are the direct “descendants” of the original cherry trees planted on April 27, 1957 by Junzo Nojima, a native of Japan who had settled in the city in 1926. In 1957, Nojima gave the city 120 Japanese cherry trees to as a thank you gift for accepting him into the community. Some sixty years later, when the original trees were deemed too old or decayed to sustain and had to be removed, thousands of cuttings were taken and nurtured with the hope they would one day be replanted at Mill River. This year, the re-plantings begin.
Visitors to the Cherry Blossom Festival will be able to see Karate & Taiko Masala (bamboo swords) performances, watch traditional tea ceremonies and even take part in kimono dressing with a photo booth to capture the moment! Young & old alike can try their hand at origami (Japanese paper folding), kirigami (Japanese paper cutting) or sumie (black ink painting), and all are invited to sample the delicious food being provided by Kujaku, Stamford’s Japanese-owned restaurant.
There are all kind of great events planned for residents of our Stamford, Norwalk, Hamden, New Haven and Branford apartment rentals so be sure to check back frequently for fun events!
