Halloween is almost here, which means it’s time for trick-or-treating, scary movies, costume parties and carving pumpkins. Picking your own pumpkins and carving them into jack-o’-lanterns is one of the most time-honored Halloween traditions, and whether you like to make yours scary, silly or even paint them, there’s sure to be a pumpkin with your name on it at one of the many pumpkin patches near New Haven.
Every year, Jones Family Farm’s Pumpkinseed Hill turns into a beautiful fall scene of bright orange pumpkins and piles of autumn squash nestled amongst bales of hay and green vines. The farm also creates an exciting original theme each year for its fall-based amusement scene, where children can play and pose for family photos. For an extra fee, try the Pumpkin Experience Tour, where you can take a hay wagon ride to a private patch to pick your own pumpkins straight off the vine.
The pumpkin crop at Bishop’s Orchards is ripe for the picking now through Halloween. This farm is full of family fun with face painting, donkey rides and scarecrow making. The Kid’s Play Korner will be back again this year along with the Hay Maze, Hay Pyramid, Tractor Track and Corn Kingdom. This farm is also one of the best places to get traditional and delicious fall treats such as apple cider, donuts and maple kettle corn. Adults, be sure to check out the winery before you leave with your new pumpkins.
Enjoy a little bit of history at the Shore Line Trolley Museum, the oldest continuously running suburban trolley line in the US, where you can bring the kids for a non-scary ride out to the pumpkin patch in a vintage trolley car. Each child can make memories that last a lifetime when they select their own small pumpkin to decorate and take home. There are also plenty of seasonal decorations for the adults to bring home as well.
