Intro to Rental Vocabulary: What You Need to Know

If it is your first time ever renting an apartment, then you might be unaware of some words you will encounter and not know the meaning to them. For this reason, we have come up with a list of words you may see or hear and their definitions to help you through the renting process:

  • Application: a written or online request for an apartment
  • Credit Report: a complete history of a person’s paying habits
  • Landlord: the person or owner who runs an apartment building or property
  • Tenant: the person who is renting an apartment or property
  • Utilities: commodities such as heat, electricity, water and sewage disposal
  • Amenities: features of a building that you wouldn’t expect to find everywhere such as a fitness center, business center, laundry room, swimming pool, childcare center, playground and community room.
  • Furnished: having furniture included
  • Sublet: to rent your apartment temporarily to someone else
  • Lease Agreement: a contract granting use or occupation of property during a specified period in exchange for a specified rent; rent due dates, penalties, utilities and rules are included in the agreement
  • Deposit: a partial or initial payment of a cost or debt
