Fat-fighting foods easily available

Many healthy food options for fighting fat

January is here, and predictably, the residents of our Montoya Branford apartment rentals are busy making good on their New Year’s resolutions. To help them along, here is a list of 10 healthy foods you should be adding to your menus – they are all familiar, easy to get and most take little to no preparation.

  • Shrimp – Just eight calories a pop, shrimp are a top-notch source of lean protein, which helps boost your metabolism and suppress your appetite.
  • Grape tomatoes – Only 30 calories, these bite-sized nibbles are sweet, colorful and ideal for snacking.
  • Egg whites – A pure, high-quality protein and just 17 calories apiece, egg whites are the ideal ingredient for a low-cal breakfast with real staying power.
  • Naturally flavored seltzer – Carbonated water with a shot of fruit flavor. It’s completely calorie-free and it doesn’t contain sugar, artificial sweeteners or food dyes.
  • Whole-grain sandwich thins – Two halves are the same calorie count as one slice of regular bread (100 calories) and we all know how important whole grains are to anyone’s diet.
  • Cucumber – One of the all-time best foods for fighting uncomfortable bloat because they’re loaded with water and naturally low in sodium. About 45 calories per average sized veggie.
  • Popcorn – A cup of “naked” air-popped popcorn without any butter or oil has only 30 calories!
  • Hot sauce – Research shows that including spicy foods at meals suppresses your appetite and slightly revs your metabolism, so hot sauce is doubly deserving of the “skinny food” title.
  • Water chestnuts – A surprising addition to the list! These under-the-radar veggies offer super satisfying crunch at just 50 calories for a whole can. They’re also super low in sodium.
  • Grapefruit – Refreshing, hydrating and one of the few seasonal winter fruits. One large grapefruit runs you just 120 calories.

There are plenty of easy ways to get all of these foods that will help you lose weight and keep your New Year’s resolutions going strong – here’s to a healthy 2012!
