A trail in Mianus Park near our Stamford rental apartments

There are lots of great hiking trails and other fun at Mianus River Gorge Preserve near our Stamford rental apartments

There’s a great local spot for residents of our Stamford rental apartments to enjoy – the Mianus River Gorge Preserve. The Mianus River park has over 700 acres of woodland and over five miles of trails straddling the Greenwich /Stamford border. The 20-mile Mianus River begins in New York State and empties into Long Island Sound flowing through Cos Cob Harbor in Greenwich. The river is also actually drinking source for about 150,000 people in lower Fairfield County and New York.

The Wildlife Center of Fairfield County recently signed a 20-year lease with the city, which will spend $150,000 to renovate a local landmark, the Mianus Red Barn. This structure, an over 5,000 square foot barn, is located in Mianus State Park and was originally built around 1900. The Wildlife Center plans to raise about $4 million dollars through private donations. Plans call for the large red barn to be transformed from its aged and dilapidated state to a nature center, providing animal rehabilitation and educational services to the city. The Red Barn nature center will also partner with local schools to provide educational opportunities.

Residents of our Stamford rental apartments are just about ten minutes by car from this great green-space.  Residents of The Townhouse apartments on Prospect Street need to drive up Prospect St, turn left onto Hoyt and then continue with the following directions. Residents of the Hoyt-Bedford or Morgan Manor apartments just drive north on Bedford Street, west on Bridge Street, then north on Westover. Follow this for about a mile and a half then bear left onto Merribrook Lane. Follow this down past the red barn and park in the designated parking spots.

If you’re just looking for a relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors, you can always pack up a picnic lunch and go hiking on the well-maintained nature trails. You can choose from several trails with different lengths and difficulty levels, accommodating just about anyone. Explore the old quartz mine, stop to watch the frogs play at any of several stream crossings and the natural waterfalls at the very end of the longest trail are worth the hike alone.
