“Cool” Family Friendly Activities Near Downtown Stamford

When I was a kid (before air conditioners) and it was too hot outside, mom would load up the Chrysler wagon with us kids and a picnic  hamper and take us up to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center for the day. Set in the rolling hills of north Stamford, you could always find a breeze up there by the pond and the nature trails that ran through the shady woods kept us cool and  happy all afternoon.

Well it’s still the place to go for a cool breeze, but now there’s plenty to do that will entice you outdoors.  Located just 3 miles north of our Stamford apartment rentals, the Stamford Museum and Nature Center has something for everyone. The kids can still wander through the Heckscher Farm; in fact each Tuesday in July and August, you can come and see what it takes to run a farm. A farm staff member will guide you through an interactive presentation. Topics will include training animals, grooming, milking goats, wool processing, and much more. Meet at the chicken coop at 2 p.m. Tuesdays and be prepared to get your hands dirty, have some farm fun and learn something new!

Or, you can practice yoga surrounded by nature in a new light-hearted summer series on Mondays through mid-August. Harness the sun energy to improve overall health and vitality, build your personal power and projection with navel-strengthening exercises to increase the “fire in your belly.” Connect with nature at its brightest. Have fun and best of all – no experience is necessary.

And while the nightlife of downtown Stamford can be hard to resist, you can see some real stars up close in an exciting new series of astronomy programs! Head to the Stamford Museum’s Observatory on selected Friday nights for a real treat to explore the night sky, planets, stars, and more! Start by enjoying a presentation on how Saturn Shines in the Summer Sky, followed by a visit to view the night sky through their 22-inch telescope. The presentation portion of the program will be held rain or shine. Viewing hours are weather permitting.
