Celebrating Chinese New Year in Stamford

Chinese New YearMost people are no doubt familiar with the 12 days of Christmas, repetitive with drummers drumming, pipers piping and a partridge in a pear tree. Less publicized, however, are the 15 days of Chinese New Year, the festival season that stretches from the new moon on New Year’s Day until the full moon on the Lantern Festival. This year, preparations for the New Year begin on January 28th, 2019 and officially begins on February 5th and ends on February 19th.

Celebrating Chinese New Year can feel like a marathon. The holiday involves at least a week of preparation prior to New Year’s Day, followed by two weeks filled with reunions among family and friends, an abundance of delicious food and parties with wishes for a New Year filled with prosperity, joy and good fortune. Mark your calendars because Chinese New Year celebrations begin in and near Stamford as early February 3. Below is a list of popular events and way to celebrate the holiday.

February 3, Chinese New Year Celebration at UConn Stamford

Experience a slice of authentic Chinese culture with activities that appeal to all ages. Taking place on Sunday, February 3 at UConn Stamford Campus Center, attendees will have the opportunity to indulge in a full Chinese buffet, fun arts and crafts and professional performances for entertainment. There will also be demonstrations, workshops, scavenger hunts, raffles and local vendors with gifts. The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and tickets can be bought at www.chineselanguageschool.org.

February 9, Lunarfest 2019: Year of the Pig at New Haven

If you’re up for a weekend drive, The Lunar New Year Festival: Year of the Pig takes place February 9 at Met Museum, about an hour away from Stamford. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will be performances, interactive gallery activities, artist-led workshops for all ages and more!

February 16, Lunarfest 2019: Year of the Pig at New Haven

Now in its 8th year, Lunarfest is the biggest Lunar New Year celebration in Connecticut! The celebration offers a traditional Lion and Dragon dance parade, eight indoor venues featuring arts and crafts, calligraphy workshops, Chinese music performances and more. Saturday, February 16, kicks off with a parade at 10:00 a.m. down Whitney Avenue and Audubon Street (between Grove and Trumbull Street). Lunarfest is the perfect opportunity to explore the diverse riches New Haven has to offer.

Celebrate with Food

Chinese New Year is celebrated with fireworks and delicious dinners by more than a billion people around the world. Try making Chinese food at your CTBest apartment.
