Just a 10-minute drive from our Montoya Apartments is Rose Orchards, where apple picking is in peak season. This orchard has been family-owned and farmed since the 1600s, so you can bet that in addition to getting some delicious seasonal fruit, you’ll be a part of a long history in the making. A variety of other produce is available for purchase, such as homemade maple syrup (apple pancakes, anyone?), baked goods and old-fashioned custard sold at the on-site creamery. Bishop’s Orchard in Guilford also has a rich family history, and is only located about 15 minutes from Branford. Bags to keep your fresh picks in are provided at no cost, and a tractor trailer ride takes visitors from the parking lot straight into the orchard. Easton is about a 40 minute drive from Branford but trust us, the trip is definitely worth it. Silverman’s Farm is one of the top-rated destinations for apple picking in the state, and it is known for its wide variety of apples to pick throughout apple season. Now is prime time for Cortland apples, so if you hurry out there, you can get some of these delicious, mild-flavored apples. Be sure to check the harvest schedule regularly at www.silvermansfarm.com/pickyourown so you can be ready when it’s time for your favorite to be picked.  And the fun at Silverman’s doesn’t stop at apple picking; when the harvest ends later in the fall, weekend scenic tractor rides will begin. These rides are truly in a league of their own, offering a 50-mile view of the countryside from one of the highest points in Southern Connecticut.

After you’ve picked your fresh finds, you can make apple cider, apple pie, apple fritters or just eat them right when you get home!  Montoya’s kitchens are ideal for baking or storing all of your apples, so there’s no limit to the possibilities.
