From the 76-foot Norway Spruce Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center to the dazzling holiday displays at Macy’s, New York City is a magical time to visit during the holiday season. For residents of apartments in downtown Stamford, the lights and festivities of New York City are just an hour away, so if you are looking for the perfect day trip or night out with family and friends, there are plenty of options.
Even if you visit the city all the time, the holidays are the perfect time to be a “tourist.” Here are a few of our favorite ways to have a Happy Holidays in New York City this year:
Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center – You may have to spend some time waiting in line, but ice skating under the branches and lights of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is a must this holiday season. The rink will be open now through April 2014, providing plenty of time to get in at least one skate before the rink closes this year. Before or after skating, don’t forget to stop by one of the many delicious restaurants located in the Plaza. For more information on the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, including rates and hours, click here.
The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center – Watch the classic story of Clara and her Nutcracker come to life as the New York City Ballet presents George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Featuring some of the top ballerinas in the world, The Nutcracker is a winter treat for the entire family. Tickets to this popular event are still available, but are going quickly. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.nycballet.com.
Christmas Tree at Washington Square Park – During your visit to New York City, don’t forget to stop by Washington Square Park and admire the beautiful Christmas tree located beneath the arch. If you are in the city on Christmas Eve, you can even join the Rob Susman Brass Quartet, a song leader and revelers from all over the city to sing out classic carols. Songbooks will be available, but we have no doubt you will know all the words to these popular holiday songs. For more information on the Christmas tree at Washington Square Park, click here.
Ice Skating in Central Park – While the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center might be the more popular rink, especially among tourists, the Wollman Rink in Central Park is a close second. With more affordable pricing and a fantastic location near Central Park Zoo, the Wollman Rink is the perfect place for some ice hockey, a skating party and more. To get to Wollman Rink, enter Central Park at 59th and 6th Avenue or 59th and 5th Avenue. For more information on pricing and hours of operations, visit www.centralpark.com.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular – The Rockettes are back for the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular. With many shows sold out and performances only available through Dec. 30, you must act fast to catch this year’s show. Radio City Music Hall is located in the heart of Rockefeller Center, so it is the perfect opportunity to plan a trip with a show and ice skating.
