Separating Space in a Studio Apartment

Separating Space in a Studio Apartment

When considering renting a studio apartment, one of the biggest concerns is space. Studio apartments typically consist of a bathroom and one large multipurpose room that serves as the bedroom, kitchen and living room. The studio layout, while extremely open, can often seem strange after living in a traditional home, and many studio renters prefer to separate the space. While simple room dividers or partition walls can do the trick, here are a few creative ways to not only separate the space, but also maximize it:

Use Bookshelves

One of the easiest ways to separate space is to use a bookshelf. Placing bookshelves perpendicular to a wall to divide the living space is an effective way to partition off the space and also provide extra storage for the apartment. Extra storage space is essential in smaller studio apartments, so having a piece of furniture that serves two functions is ideal. The bookshelves don’t have to reach the ceiling, however taller shelves draw the eye upward and provide the illusion of height.

Create Space with Curtains

If you’re looking for a bit more privacy in your studio apartment, try using a curtain and curtain rod. Using a curtain is not only a great way to divide up living space from sleeping space, but it is also inexpensive, easy to install and takes up little room. The best part is that you can expand or close off the room whenever you want. Slide the curtain closed to create a quiet nook and slide it open to create a bright, open living space.

Loft Beds

If you’re not opposed to heights, consider raising your bed with a loft. Lofted beds move the bed above eye level to create an elevated sleeping space that feels separated from the rest of the room. Lofted beds are also a great way to increase much-needed floor space in a studio apartment. Use the extra space underneath the loft for additional storage, extra seating or a mini office space.
