Fall into County Fairs this Season

Pig Races at a County Fair in ConnecticutIt’s that time of year again; the weather is getting cooler, the leaves are turning colors and a time-honored tradition is once again gearing up to bring joy to thousands all over the state of Connecticut. At the many fairs and festivals happening throughout the month of September and early October, families take hayrides, browse rows of seasonal arts and crafts, dance to local live music and enjoy some amazing food. And if you can’t wait to get out there and see what festival season has to offer, there are many options within a quick 30-minute drive from our rentals in Hamden and Branford.

Sept. 24-27: The Durham Agricultural Fair
The Durham Agricultural Fair is Connecticut’s largest fair, and this year marks its 96th year of “good, clean, wholesome fun.” There will be livestock exhibitions, rides, a talent show, redneck games, a wine festival and some of the absolute best entertainment around. National headlining acts this year include Martina McBride, Craig Morgan and Confederate Railroad. If you’re going to be at any fair this season, this is definitely the one! You can find more information online at www.durhamfair.com.

Oct. 2-4, 9-11: The Southington Apple Harvest
Another well-established fair coming soon is the Southington Apple Harvest. For 47 years, this festival has featured live music and entertainment, contests, crafts and of course, apples. Mouth-watering apple fritters are the main event here, so be sure to get in line early. The apple fritter booth is also open during the week if you don’t want to wait in the longer lines. For more information, visit www.southington.org/AHF.

Oct. 9-11: Portland Agricultural Fair
One of the most interesting fairs you’ll find this season is the Portland Agricultural Fair. Events at this one-of-a-kind festival include tractor and truck pulls, Rosie’s Racing Pigs, carving demonstrations, a dirty ditch mud run and a scarecrow decorating contest. There will also be plenty of food, rides and live entertainment. You can see the full lineup of events online at www.portlandfair.com.
